Study Visit – Manila, Philippines

A Week of Learning and Cultural Exchange in the Philippines

Study Visit within the Cultural Synergy Project

This week, representatives of the partner organisations involved in the Cultural Synergy project gathered in Manila, Philippines, for a study visit dedicated to learning, exchange of experiences and strengthening international cooperation.

The visit brought together partners from different countries who share a common goal: to better understand the realities of migration and the care sector while building bridges between Europe and the Philippines through dialogue, research and collaboration.

A meaningful start at Scalabrini Migration Center

The programme began at the Scalabrini Migration Center, a renowned institution working on migration research and advocacy. The opening session created the perfect setting for partners to get to know each other better, present their organisations and discuss their role within the Cultural Synergy project.

During the meeting, participants explored the first insights emerging from the project and engaged in an open discussion about migration trends, workforce mobility and the growing importance of the care sector. The dialogue highlighted both the challenges and opportunities related to international cooperation and ethical recruitment of care workers.

More importantly, the session set the tone for the entire week: one of openness, curiosity and a shared commitment to learning from one another.

Discovering education and professional pathways

The study visit continued with a visit to St. Paul University Manila – Center for Career Development, where participants had the opportunity to learn about the services and programmes that support students in preparing for their professional future.

Discussions focused on how educational institutions can guide students toward meaningful career paths, especially in sectors that are increasingly interconnected at a global level, such as healthcare and social care. The visit offered valuable insights into how universities in the Philippines support professional development and respond to labour market needs.

Understanding care services on the ground

One of the most impactful moments of the week was the visit to Milagros Elderly Home Care, a private residential care institution that provides support and assistance for elderly residents.

Partners were introduced to the daily routines, organisational structure and care practices implemented by the institution’s staff. The visit offered a valuable opportunity to reflect on similarities and differences in elderly care systems and to exchange perspectives on the future of care services in an increasingly ageing global population.

The programme also included a visit to GRACES, a government-run facility providing services for vulnerable residents. Here, participants gained deeper insight into the structure and challenges of public social care services in the Philippines, while engaging in discussions with local professionals dedicated to supporting those in need.

Experiencing the cultural heartbeat of Manila

Beyond the institutional visits, the study visit also offered moments to experience the rich culture and vibrant atmosphere of Manila.

Participants explored the surroundings of the University of the Philippines, enjoyed a traditional jeepney ride, and discovered the historic district of Intramuros, where heritage buildings, local cuisine and traditional performances offered a glimpse into the country’s cultural identity.

These informal moments were just as important as the formal sessions, providing opportunities for participants to connect, share stories and strengthen relationships that go beyond project activities.

Strengthening international cooperation

By the end of the week, the study visit had achieved much more than simply presenting information. It created a space for mutual understanding, professional reflection and the strengthening of international partnerships.

The experiences shared during the visit will contribute to the ongoing work of the Cultural Synergy project, supporting its mission to foster cooperation, exchange knowledge and promote better understanding between Europe and the Philippines in the field of migration and care services.

As partners return home, they bring with them not only valuable insights, but also new perspectives, connections and inspiration for the next steps of the project.
